Dave began his intellectual property (IP) career at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). During his tenure at the USPTO, Dave practiced as a Patent Examiner in the medical technologies area (Art Unit 3302) and had the opportunity to examine hundreds of patent applications pertaining to various medical inventions, particularly those related to surgical and physical rehabilitation devices.
Dave left the USPTO in 1997 to begin his career as an IP attorney with Thomas | Horstemeyer. In his first years at the firm, Dave’s practice was primarily focused on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications for mechanical inventions. Soon, however, the subject matter of Dave's work expanded to the electrical and computing arts, which are the focus of many of the firm’s clients. At present, the bulk of Dave’s patent preparation and prosecution work is performed for corporations and research universities and relates to mechanical, electrical, and software technologies, and medical innovations that incorporate them. To date, Dave has helped secure hundreds of patents for his clients.
In addition to patent application preparation and prosecution, Dave has extensive experience in rendering legal opinions on various patent law subjects including infringement, non-infringement, validity, and invalidity. Outside of patent law, Dave has prepared and prosecuted trademark applications, assisted clients in trademark clearance and adoption, and secured copyright registrations.
Dave currently practices out of the firm's Los Angeles office to serve firm clients located on the West Coast, and California in particular. Dave can be directly reached as his Los Angeles office at (323) 688-2126.
Dave is a member of the Virginia bar and the Georgia bar, and is licensed to practice before the USPTO.
